Opportunity at Historic Parkrose

The Neighborhood Prosperity Initiative (NPI) and Main Street Network focuses on community economic development at the neighborhood scale. A community-driven, self-help approach is at the heart of our work. With grants, training, and support from the Portland Development Commission, each district is responsible for planning and implementing projects to improve the local commercial district. The NPI and Main Street Network is a key component of the City of Portland's Neighborhood Economic Development Strategy (NED) - a citywide initiative to foster economic opportunity and neighborhood vitality throughout Portland neighborhoods, with a focus on low-income and communities of color. The Main Street/Neighborhood Prosperity Initiative AmeriCorps*VISTA program goals are: (1) To stimulate economic development within the district resulting in increased access to job training, business technical assistance and opportunities for employment. Sample activities within this goal include: developing relationships with partner agencies and resources, development of tools/programs to support emerging entrepreneurs. (2) To develop and implement fundraising strategies based on diversified income streams. Stable and diversified resource development strategies will allow the district to spend more time on economic development activities and less on fundraising activities. Activities will include sustainable fund development initiatives including tracking, outreach and grant writing. (3) To create a strong base of committed volunteers and the systems to support transitions on or off of committees and/or projects. Activities include creating and implementing a volunteer plan, including outreach & recruitment, screening & matching, training & support, monitoring and evaluation and recognition.
