SOTS – Native Elders Program – Montana

Preserve Native American culture on Blackfeet Nation's reservation in Montana through a year of AmeriCorps VISTA service! As a VISTA with Spirit of the Sun (SOTS) you will work to alleviate disparities in health, nutrition, adequate and safe housing, transportation, poverty, the environment, digital divide, and social isolation. SOTS is a nonprofit that focuses on community and economic development within Native American communities nationwide. SOTS VISTA members at this location will have the opportunity to work on a variety of capacity building projects for the community. Based with the tribal workforce development office, this VISTA will build program capacity, write grants, enhance services and coordination, and perform other locally directed activities. Examples of past VISTA projects include work with elder services, VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance), and teen pregnancy prevention. Tribal work sites vary and VISTA members are REQUIRED to RELOCATE to very rural locations for their year of service. SOTS works hard to place VISTAs into the appropriate site based on experience, knowledge, and interests. Housing is not provided by the work site and is the responsibility of the VISTA member to locate. Additionally, because these are rural communities, VISTAs must have a personal vehicle to travel between their home and work site. Life on or near the reservation will vary between work sites, but the VISTA member can expect to have a world of opportunity to participate in a variety of cultural, outdoor, and recreational activities. These include: attendance at some tribal festivals, powwows, and celebrations; the chance to be immersed in their community and learn native languages; the ability to practice traditional arts, crafts, sports and customs; and a close proximity to some of the best National Parks in the United States. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, committed to alleviating poverty in Indian Country, and have a keen sense of adventure!

Member Duties : The VISTA will support tribes, tribal organizations, and native non-profits that fight issues of poverty for Native Americans. VISTAs will work on a range of activities depending on the needs of the specific reservation to which they are assigned. Activities are aimed at long-term sustainability and capacity building, and will include: resource development through fundraising and grant writing; community organizing by identifying volunteers and developing training programs; and service enhancement through program design and business development. Additional projects are locally directed to build better communities and strengthen the healthy futures of tribal elders and other tribal community members. VISTAs are required to: be self-motivated and flexible; relocate to an extremely rural location; have good communication skills; have excellent writing and researching ability; and have knowledge of or interest in native communities.
