Ohio Hispanic Coalition Safety VISTA

The Ohio Hispanic Coalition's safety program is aimed to educate, serve and increase awareness in the Hispanic/Latino community in Central Ohio regarding various topics and issues related to safety. The main program in this department is the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Program, which provides outreach, education, advocacy, assistance and referral services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. OHCO has bilingual, bicultural Promotoras de Salud (community health workers that act as client advocates) that provide individual and group support services. The Promotoras serve as intermediaries between Spanish-speaking clients and services or agencies that are primarily for English-speaking victims. Part of the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Program is Soy Latina, a 10 week educational support group program for Latina women. Within this 10 week program, the victims are exposed to different topics such as self-esteem, victim’s rights, sexual violence, safety planning, and methods to solve problems without violence to name a few. The support group meets once a week for one hour at different locations around the city. The safety program also strives to educate Latinos on the importance of: traffic laws, the use of seat belts, the negative effects of driving while intoxicated, the correct use of child seats, among many other important safety matters. As part of the safety department, the Ohio Hispanic Coalition has certified child seat technicians who educate and install child seats for Latino families in Ohio. When funding is available, car seat fairs are held to give away free car seats and to teach families on the correct installation of the seats in their vehicles.
