Ohio Hispanic Coalition Health VISTA

The Ohio Hispanic Coalition (OHCO) was founded in 1990 to help Latino women find pre-natal services and Health has been one of the key departments of the organization ever since. The purpose of the Health program is to ensure that monolingual immigrants receive access to quality health services, social services and resources. Our program links immigrant families to medical and support services by contacting them in their communities. The key programs in this department are Promotoras de Salud and Moms Quit for Two. The Promotoras de Salud program is an innovative approach to community education and medical services in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner. Promotoras de Salud (Lay Health Worker/Community Health Worker) become not just educators, but also interpreters and caseworkers within the community. The goals of the PDS program include: (I) Community Outreach (II) Community Education, and (III) Decreased Health/Medical Vulnerability of High Risk Families through Case Management. OHCO has contracts with Columbus Public Health and Columbus Neighborhood Health Centers to provide Promotoras de Salud at their clinics. The Moms Quit for Two program was started in 2016 through a grant from the Ohio Department of Health. The program provides counseling and smoke cessation education for expecting mothers, in addition to diaper vouchers for mothers that stay smoke free after giving birth.
