Ohio Hispanic Coalition Youth and Education VISTA

The Youth and Education Department at the Ohio Hispanic Coalition (OHCO) is unlike any other in Columbus. Our programs provide the encouragement and support necessary for the Latino community members to become successful not only academically, but also personally. The programs currently offered by this department are the After School and Summer Enrichment Programs, and Citizenship/ESL classes, all of which are free of charge. Through the After School and Summer Enrichment Programs OHCO provides culturally and linguistically appropriate educational and enrichment services to over 150 students annually. In 2014 the programs have almost doubled both in number of students and staff and are expected to continue growing in 2015. These programs focus on providing a fun, educational, and safe environment for the students to grow and learn. The youth programs follow four key focus areas: Education, Service to Community, Expression, and Healthy Lifestyle. The Citizenship/ESL courses meet weekly over an 8 week period and multiple sessions are offered each year. The courses are taught by a trained Citizenship instructor and provide a comfortable environment in which Limited English Proficient (LEP) individuals can learn. OHCO has found that combining both the information that people are required to know for the Citizenship test and English-language instruction gives the community members in the course a relevant and important context in which to learn the language. In 2015 OHCO would like to expand its adult education programs by offering online Spanish-language primary courses to anyone who has not finished high school. The online system is coordinated by the Mexican government and is available free of charge. OHCO will use its Community Computer Lab, located at its Westside office, for these classes and will have a flexible schedule to ensure that all adults can attend when they are available.
