Food for Life VISTA

The North Alabama Agriplex, which works to promote North Alabama's agriculture heritage and future, is beginning the Food for Life program intended to promote healthy food access and supplement science education in Cullman County, Alabama and surrounding areas. These goals would be accomplished through directly connecting people with local sources of fresh produce and education programs targeting children and adults in the community. Cullman like many rural areas in Alabama has high rates of childhood and adult obesity among impoverished groups. Cullman also has a successful agricultural industry with many different types of crops and livestock produced locally. The combination of these two elements makes Cullman uniquely suited for a program like Food for Life that will promote nutritious and local food choices among the community. Food for Life proposes to utilize five AmeriCorps VISTAs to provide educational programming, crop gleaning and farmers market coordination, grant writing, and other services to help improve the health outcomes in Cullman County and surrounding areas for three years.
