Grow Food - Viva Farms

Viva’s proposed AmeriCorps positions support our mission to help launch a new generation of farmers. Viva Farms is a nationally recognized and award winning farm incubator program that has been featured in the New York Times and Christian Science Monitor. Viva Farms is a key educational partner in Skagit Valley Community College, Edmonds Community College and Seattle Central College's SAgE Collaborative, a regional sustainable agriculture education and workforce development initiative funded by the National Science Foundation. Sustainable Agriculture Participatory Educators will provide service at the heart of Viva Farms by providing education and technical assistance with organic crop production, post harvest support, and assisting with sales and distribution of farmer produce is essential for our start-up farm enterprises. AmeriCorps members will serve hands-on at the farm and with the Viva’s diverse base of start-up farmers. These positions will assist the farm manager in caring for and managing equipment and facilities, helping farmers maintain organic certification records, and helping monitor crops and soil health. The Sustainable Agriculture Participatory Educators will recruit, coordinate, and train volunteers for Viva Farms, including groups from schools, and from partner organizations: Washington State University Extension, Skagit Valley College and Growing Veterans, a nonprofit that helps veterans launch careers in organic agriculture. AmeriCorps members will help to promote Viva Farms’ mission by writing and distributing a quarterly e-newsletter, featuring stories from the farm, volunteer opportunities and activities, and general updates about the AmeriCorps project. AmeriCorps members will help develop systems and best practice guidelines for all of the AmeriCorps projects that will be new at Viva Farms. These include: the volunteer program, assisting with Organic Certification record keeping, and creating monthly e-newsletters.
