Step by Step 2017 Summer Associate
 
 
 
The Summer Associate will serve a 10 week term. Positions serving rural communities are available in Lincoln and Logan Counties. Positions serving urban communities are available in the city of Charleston, WV. PROGRAM SPONSOR: Now celebrating more than 25 years working with children and families, Step by Step, Inc. is a regional, grassroots, non-profit organization that ensures disadvantaged children living in rural, geographically-isolated communities receive continuous, comprehensive care from birth to independent adulthood. Whether at our community centers, in our after-school and summer programs, or as part of our home visits, at-risk youth and their families have access to free education services, healthcare, economic support, and an array of training opportunities. Along with a broad network of local, state, and regional partners, Step by Step empowers children and their families to “dream, work, and grow” together.

Member Duties : Along with summer program staff members, Summer Associates will provide opportunities for at-risk children and youth to develop & strengthen academic, physical, and social skills through participation in STEAM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Art-Math) activities. Activities might include: NASA Rocketry, tornado-in-a-jar, dinosaurs & fossils, music & math. In addition, Summer VISTAs will support implementation of the StrengthsFinder model of leadership development among at risk youth including identifying middle and senior high students to participate, assisting them in exploring interests, setting short term personal & academic goals, recruiting community resources and mentors to help them achieve those goals, and working with students to share progress with family members and school officials. Applicants with knowledge & passion for one or more of the following focus areas are strongly welcomed: reading, math, art, science, social studies, technology, health, environmental studies.
