GHCC/Neighborhood Design Center - Assessment Specialist

The Neighborhood Design Center (NDC) provides pro bono planning, conceptual design, and community engagement services. Since 1968, NDC has worked on over 2000 community planning projects for community organizations, local governments, and non-profits that wish to initiate architectural, landscape architecture, or other design projects to ultimately reduce poverty in Baltimore City and the surrounding area. These conceptual design projects have included designs for new community centers, produce gardens, and neighborhood master plans. At NDC we know anecdotally that many of our projects have led to implementation of important projects, have resulted in neighborhood change, and have forged stronger communities even when project implementation has floundered. However, NDC has not consistently tracked whether projects have been implemented, what short and long term community investments have resulted from our plans, and the change in community perception of their neighborhood before and after NDC partnership. We wish to move beyond mere narrative to quantifiable assessments of impact because our lack of data is severely limiting our access to additional funding. We are seeking a VISTA to determine and describe our impact to date so we can reach out to funders in order to stabilize and grow our poverty reducing efforts. This position is sponsored by Greater Homewood Community Corporation (GHCC) in Baltimore, MD; and the VISTA member will serve at Neighborhood Design Center in Baltimore, MD. GHCC sponsors more than 20 VISTA members at various nonprofit, government, and community organizations located throughout Maryland. Established in 1969 to help neighborhoods become safer, better places to live, GHCC's mission is to build and strengthen vibrant urban communities. GHCC provides monthly professional development opportunities and the support of a VISTA Leader.
