GHCC/Arts on the Block - Program Expansion Coordinator

The mission of Arts on the Block (AOB) is to empower creative youth to imagine and shape fulfilling futures and contribute to the quality of life of their communities. For example, Arts on the Block and YMCA Youth and Family Services (YFS) have partnered to bring art and design to the very low-income Carroll Avenue/Quebec Terrace (CA/QT) community to beautify the neighborhood, increase the sense of safety, and engage residents in improving the quality of their lives. The first permanent project was completed in 2011, embellishing a pair of outdoor stairs central to the CA/QT community with vibrant mosaics. A second multi-phase project that brings artistic lighting to the community is currently underway. It is our hope that the VISTA will use the model developed throughout the work with CA/QT to engage another low-income community in Montgomery County to yield similar positive results specific to that community. AOB currently works with mosaics because of its popularity among buyers, in addition to the number of job and life skills that can be developed and applied in the workplace as a result of learning this art form. However, without additional artistic media to learn and master, it is difficult to retain youth participants and further reinforce the skills they have learned. The introduction of one or more new media could attract a new group of participants, retain current participants for additional seasons, as well as provide greater choices for community redevelopment efforts. This position is sponsored by Greater Homewood Community Corporation (GHCC) in Baltimore, MD; and the VISTA member will serve at Arts on the Block in Montgomery County, MD. GHCC sponsors more than 20 VISTA members at various nonprofit, government, and community organizations located throughout Maryland. GHCC's mission is to build and strengthen vibrant urban communities. GHCC provides monthly professional development opportunities and the support of a VISTA Leader.
