VYT-The DREAM Program- Bennington (Summer)

DREAM has proven itself to be a life changing experience for both the youth and adult staff members and volunteers throughout Vermont. Our mission is to build communities of families and college students that empower children from affordable housing neighborhoods to recognize their options, make informed decisions, and achieve their dreams. This leads to our ultimate goal for the children; that through their participation with DREAM they will grow to develop the skills and resources needed for each of them to reach their full potential. According to the Department of Education’s Office of Innovation and Improvement “Children who are from low-income families and grow up in high-poverty neighborhoods face academic and life challenges above and beyond the challenges faced by children who are from low-income families who grow up in neighborhoods without a high concentration of poverty.” DREAM has been aware of this phenomenon for over a decade and our program has developed to address this. Our exclusive focus on children from low-income housing communities enables us to reach a population that is both underserved and at the highest risk for academic failure and future challenges. Key to our success is the unique toolkit of complementary programs that we have created including weekly one-on-one and group mentoring sessions, group activities, and quarterly culminating experiences. Unique to our model is our enriching on-site summer programming and a summer residential camp and winter adventure camp. VISTA positions are available in White River Junction, Bennington, Rutland, and Burlington.

Member Duties : The Summer Community VISTA in Bennington works with a passionate group of people to provide summer programming to youth ages 5-18 living in an affordable housing community in Bennington. In addition to developing and implementing youth programming, the VISTA also works closely with families to build and support strong community relationships. The VISTA will create and provide an enriching summer program designed to foster positive youth development and prevent summer learning loss. While the VISTA creates their own schedule of activities, with input from youth and families, examples of activities that may take place are swimming, gardening, healthy cooking, sailing, arts & crafts, cool science experiments, college tours, and anything else the VISTA can come up with! The sky’s the limit, and a big goal is for the VISTA and youth is to spend the summer DREAMing big!
