United Way Greater Austin Middle School Matters
 
 
 
United Way for Greater Austin's Middle School Matters program supports three middle schools in the Austin area: Mendez Middle School located in the Dove Springs Neighborhood, Webb Middle School located in the St. Johns Neighborhood and Decker Middle School located in Manor. These three schools were selected based on their needs as low income schools with high dropout rates. A strong candidate would possess the following skills and interest: passion for changing educational outcomes, strong relationship building skills, organizational skills, team work, interest in independent research and willingness to learn as you go. The VISTA’s duties will include but are not limited to: conducting a landscape analysis on local and regional service learning opportunities for middle school students, building and cultivating relationships with community and school members, determining best evaluation practices for volunteer effectiveness and positive youth development, coordinating across departments to build volunteer strategy and engaging key stakeholders.

Member Duties : Duties include: Researching best practices and local examples of youth service learning, creating an evaluation strategy to measure effectiveness and quality of youth volunteerism, coordinate across departments to engage all stakeholders in relevant projects, collaborate with the marketing team to create fundraising and informational material, create volunteer orientation that includes cultural competency and youth development appropriate for the populations served and assemble a shareable tool kit to guide implementation in other schools and communities.
