GHCC/Alliance - Project LIFTT Associate

It is well documented that the key to changing the prospects for low-income children is the excellence of their education. Any improvement that can be brought about through the development of their parents as advocates and co-educators improves their children’s chances of success. The Alliance for Community Teachers and Schools (the Alliance) provides evidence-based leadership training and development to schools and communities. Their program, Project LIFTT (Learning Ignited by Families and Teachers Together!), promotes leadership development and collaboration between parents and teachers in Baltimore City Public Schools. In the neighborhoods that LIFTT schools serve, 93-99% of children qualify for FARM subsidies (free and reduced meals), a standard measure of local poverty. Through community organizing in and around schools, LIFTT teams in each school undertake a School Development Campaign to address significant challenges and build towards significant change over time. Project LIFTT provides a structure for interested school leaders to engage with parents who are experts about the community within which they live, complemented by the teacher’s traditional experience in education. Both parents and teachers will be challenged to learn from one another in classroom and community contexts, and to improve their own practices, both in school and at home. This position is sponsored by Greater Homewood Community Corporation (GHCC) in Baltimore, MD; and the VISTA member will serve at the Alliance in Baltimore, MD. GHCC sponsors more than 20 VISTA members at various nonprofit, government, and community organizations located throughout Maryland. Established in 1969 to help neighborhoods become safer, better places to live, GHCC's mission is to build and strengthen vibrant urban communities. GHCC provides monthly professional development opportunities and the support of a VISTA Leader.
