FIT VISTA - Community Outreach at Arts in Reach

Arts In Reach (AIR) is a nonprofit organization which serves over 100 disadvantaged and underserved teenage girls throughout New Hampshire’s Rockingham and Strafford counties. Most of our teens participate in two or more of the eight literary, visual, and performing arts programs we conduct each year. AIR furnishes its after-school and school vacation programs—transportation included—completely free of charge to a largely underserved, poor or low-income population. About one-third of AIR’s teenage girls live below the poverty line. Almost one-half of them come from low-income households. About 40 percent of our participants qualify for and receive school lunch subsidies. The $40,000 median family income of our AIR families does not go far in this very high cost of living area. In addition to the economic hardships most of our AIR teenagers face, about 45% of our participants also suffer from various physical, mental, learning, or emotional conditions. Many AIR teens suffer from eating disorders. Some have learning disorders. Some are victims of physical or sexual abuse. Some are the targets of bullying. Many experience depression—depression that can lead to poor decision-making, thoughts of suicide, low self-esteem, and lack of a sense of accomplishment. Almost half of AIR teens live in single-parent households, and over three-quarters of those households are headed by women. Especially in those circumstances where one or both parents work outside the home, our girls find themselves in “self-care” and unsupervised situations during after-school hours and school vacations. For the vast majority of these at risk girls and their families, after-school and vacation activities are simply cost-prohibitive and way beyond their reach financially. Lack of transportation is another all too common obstacle for teenagers. These teenage girls desperately need, but generally lack access to, enriching activities and caring adult mentors.
