Cycles for Change -- St. Paul VISTA Program

The mission of Cycles for Change (C4C) is to build a diverse and empowered community of cyclists. C4C's youth education, employment, and leadership development programs focus on providing St. Paul youth with access to quality, out-of-school-time programming that supports their academic achievement, prepares them for college and career opportunities, and engages them as community leaders. C4C offers a variety of youth engagement opportunities, including: drop-in hours for youth to repair their bicycles; one-time classes to build skills in bike maintenance; weekly rides through C4C's Youth Bike Club; a four-week build-a-bike class, where youth learn repair skills while fixing up a bicycle to keep; and a year-long Youth Apprenticeship, where youth get paid to learn skills in bicycle mechanics while engaging positively with the neighborhood as youth bicycle ambassadors. C4C's programs are designed to provide cascading opportunities for involvement, where youth can begin by dropping in, take a more involved class as they get excited about the work, and then become further involved as youth apprentices. C4C's youth programming engages primarily low-income and under-served middle and high school youth. The organization is located at 712 University Avenue, in the heart of the diverse, low-income Frogtown/Summit-University neighborhood. A VISTA member will help Cycles for Change to reach new community members so that we can expand the number of young people that we are able to directly work with. In addition, the VISTA will work to develop high quality engaging programming and to secure the funding necessary to continue and expand our work. **This VISTA position is sponsored by the Saint Paul VISTA Program. Hosted in Mayor Chris Coleman's Office, the Saint Paul VISTA Program comprises a city-wide cohort of individuals -- placed at community organizations and schools -- dedicated to shaping the educational landscape for youth and families in Saint Paul.**
