Right Track Youth Jobs Initiative-- St. Paul VISTA Program

Right Track is St. Paul’s pipeline for youth career development and building a diverse future workforce. Right Track brings together the City of St. Paul, St. Paul Public Schools, businesses, and community-based organizations to provide work readiness and employment opportunities for youth. The Right Track pipeline includes three levels of opportunities for youth: 1)Youth Jobs 01 (YJ01) offers basic work experience in parks, libraries, construction, childcare, video production, gardening, and more. 2)Youth Jobs 02 (YJ02) provides professional internships for youth going into 11th or 12th grade who have worked before or have significant leadership experience. 3)Youth Jobs Pro (YJPro) is a collection of partner-run programs that offer advanced opportunities in specific sectors such as IT or healthcare. Nearly one-third of St. Paul's youth ages 16-19 are unemployed; this is significantly higher than the rate for Minnesota (20%) and the nation (16%). The Twin Cities have among the nation's highest racial disparities in educational outcomes and employment. The Right Track initiative addresses the critical need for St. Paul educators and employers to join forces in building a diverse future workforce. Through the work of an AmeriCorps VISTA, the Right Track initiative will: offer more opportunities for youth to develop advanced skills in specific career sectors (YJPro); be better able to use data in evaluating connections between the three levels of programming; expand use of Mozilla Open Badges to recognize skills gained through internships; and develop professional skills training curricula for Right Track youth interns. **This VISTA position is sponsored by the Saint Paul VISTA Program. Hosted in Mayor Chris Coleman's Office, the Saint Paul VISTA Program comprises a city-wide cohort of individuals -- placed at community organizations and schools -- dedicated to shaping the educational landscape for youth and families in Saint Paul.**
