West Side Summit -- St. Paul VISTA Program

West Side Summit (WSS) is an elementary charter school located in St. Paul's West Side. The school adresses the achievement and opportunity gaps affecting the low-income communities of St. Paul. Our mission is to empower students to find joy in learning and develop the academic efficacy necessary to prepare them for the rigors of a college education and beyond. WSS is a new and innovative blended learning program for children living in poverty. The model focuses on closing basic skills gaps and accelerating learning for the individual through technology. Scholars at WSS spend 25% of their school day on adaptive and personalized computer-based curricula in math and reading that identifies gaps in student knowledge. Combined with small group, data-driven instruction, Scholars receive targeted and individualized lessons that close skills gaps quickly, allowing us to get to the work of college readiness as early as Kindergarten. Put simply, we aim to provide the right lesson to the right student at the right time every day. The VISTA member will hold the new role of Volunteer Coordinator. Starting a pattern and tradition of family involvement and volunteerism from the local community in our new school is essential to our success. The Volunteer Coordinator will design a volunteer recruitment and training process, recruit new volunteers to serve as classroom tutors, increase parent participation in the school, strengthen existing partnerships with community organizations, and set up college and workforce-focused field trips and presentations to support our school’s mission. **This VISTA position is sponsored by the Saint Paul VISTA Program. Hosted in Mayor Chris Coleman's Office, the Saint Paul VISTA Program is comprised of a city-wide cohort of individuals -- placed at community organizations and schools -- dedicated to shaping the educational landscape for youth and families in Saint Paul.**
