QENO/BRC Community Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator

The Blue Ribbon Commission on the Prevention of Youth Violence is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that serves low income families with a focus on youth that are at-risk of participating in or becoming victims of gang violence. Committed to the mission statement of “Building a community where youth are safe, healthy, educated, and successful…Now”, The BRC serves an area known as the Youth Enrichment Zone (YEZ), which is a mapped out area that was designated after police analyzed a seven-year period of crime trends including heavy gang related violence. The YEZ is located within a fourteen block area of a documented high crime and high poverty area on the north side of downtown Wilmington. The BRC was formed in 2008 as an initiative under the United Way of the Cape Fear Area to serve as a unified front to improve collaboration amongst agencies with the purpose of strengthening existing programs to address the heightened violence in New Hanover County at the time. In the summer of 2012, the BRC helped reopen D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy and moved its offices within the school to more effectively support the needs of the middle school students and their families. D.C. Virgo currently has 220 6th and 7th grade students enrolled with a student population of 95% African American with 95% Free and Reduced Lunch eligible and will have 6th- 8th grades next year. A majority of the students that attend D.C. Virgo live in and around the YEZ neighborhoods and are considered at-risk. Through the coordination of a continuum of support and services for youth and families within the YEZ, the BRC works to provide access to after school programs, summer programs, life-skills and parenting programs, health and wellness services and programs, and the development of violence prevention programs and activities.

Member Duties : The VISTA would design and implement an effective volunteer infrastructure to support the sustainability of the volunteer base in the YEZ that would focus on volunteer services within D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy, the Hemingway Center, and organized events in the greater YEZ community. The other significant role of the VISTA would be to develop and implement an effective community outreach plan in order to connect YEZ families and youth to much needed services, programs, and resources. These services are made accessible in the YEZ through the BRC’S collaboration with partnering organizations and agencies that provide outreach for identified needs focused on safety, health and wellness, and educational success. The VISTA would have an opportunity to work with community members and partnering organizations to help promote social change through positive community efforts in the YEZ by facilitating outcomes that impact our families and youth.
