QENO/Carousel Center Volunteer and Community Outreach

Founded in January 2000, The Carousel Center, Inc. (TCe) opened its doors due to the specific efforts of the Wilmington Junior league, and NHRMC Emergency Department Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, Gail McGirt, RN, SANE, local county Departments of Social Services, Offices of the District Attorneys, and the Rape Crisis Center of Coastal Horizons Center, Inc. This collaboration of community professionals recognized a that child abuse victims had special service needs, both to address medical needs and preserve forensic evidence (to ensure holding community child predators accountable) AND, most importantly, special service needs for the child victim and their families to have quality victim advocacy and therapy services to heal from the traumatic impact of the abuse. Today, TCC serves children from throughout Southeastern North Carolina, with the primary focus of services on abused and neglected children from New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties. Since opening its doors, TCC provided Child Medical Examinations (CMEs) to 2,828 children, and more than 4,224 therapy sessions, as of December 31, 2013. TCC employs full and part-time CME Providers, child therapist Child Forensic Interviewers and Family Advocates, all within its scope of operations, making in the Cadillac model for an accredited Child Advocacy Center in North Carolina.
