GHCC/BCHD-Baltimarket

Promoting health equity and reducing health disparities are the Baltimore City Health Department’s top priorities. As the local health authority, our vision is to create a city where all residents realize their full health potential. Baltimarket is a community-based program aiming to improve the health and wellness of Baltimore residents by using food access and food justice as strategies for community transformation. Baltimarket programs work to promote nutrition knowledge and skills while tackling systemic inequities in order to affect the diet, and ultimately health, of food desert residents. The Baltimarket program includes the Virtual Supermarket Program, the Healthy Stores program, and the Neighborhood Food Advocates initiative. The Virtual Supermarket is the flagship Baltimarket program: a first-nationally, award-winning program that uses online grocery ordering and delivery to bring food to community sites in food desert neighborhoods. This program aims to reduce childhood obesity through a community-based program that transforms the retail food environment in food deserts, engaging corner stores, youth, and grocery stores to increase supply of and demand for healthy foods. Neighborhood Food Advocates work with Baltimarket programs by engaging and organizing residents in food desert communities. This position is sponsored by Greater Homewood Community Corporation (GHCC) in Baltimore, MD; and the VISTA member will serve with the Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD) in Baltimore, MD. GHCC serves as the VISTA Project Sponsor to more than 20 nonprofit, government, and community organizations throughout Baltimore City and Maryland. Established in 1969 to help neighborhoods become safer, better places to live, GHCC's mission is to build and strengthen vibrant urban communities. GHCC will provide support to BCHD and the VISTA member throughout the year, including recruitment, training, professional development opportunities, and resources.
