GHCC/CEO - Elementary School STEM Program Associate

The Center for Educational Outreach (CEO) was established by the Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins University to develop educational and outreach programs directed towards underrepresented groups in STEM. The goal of CEO is to increase the number of youth who pursue STEM education and careers, particularly women and underrepresented minorities. The VISTA will strengthen the STEM Achievement in Baltimore Elementary Schools (SABES) afterschool program at six school sites during the 2014-2015 school year. The free and reduced meals (FARM) rate for the Baltimore City Public Schools targeted within the SABES program ranges from 88%-98% of students. Though SABES is funded by the National Science Foundation, the current funds and staffing model are insufficient to meet the needs of the program. During the first year of implementation, our team recognized that tremendous efforts are needed to prepare STEM afterschool facilitators and build capacity within our partner organizations. The VISTA will improve the effectiveness and sustainability of STEM afterschool programming while building capacity. This position is sponsored by Greater Homewood Community Corporation (GHCC) in Baltimore, MD; and the VISTA member will serve at the Center for Educational Outreach, part of the Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, in Baltimore, MD. GHCC sponsors more than 20 VISTA members at various nonprofit, government, and community organizations located throughout Maryland. Established in 1969 to help neighborhoods become safer, better places to live, GHCC's mission is to build and strengthen vibrant urban communities. GHCC provides monthly professional development opportunities and the support of a VISTA Leader.
