Wilkes University - PACC

About 1.4 million veterans are considered at-risk of homelessness due to poverty, lack of support networks, and poor living conditions (National Coalition for Homeless Veterans). Veteran Students have many qualities that offer peers a world-view not otherwise shared with traditional students, however, their military experience may overshadow academic progress can also be a source of stress that decreases the likelihood of their persistence in postsecondary education. The National Center for Education Statistics indicates that 49.3% student veterans did not complete their degree. These factors have prompted Wilkes University to develop the Inter-organizational Veteran Educational Team (INVEST) program. Wilkes University wants veterans to maximize their education opportunities; INVEST will ensure the university and community veterans achieve at the highest level. Wilkes University has the distinction of being designated as a Military Friendly School and participates fully in the Veterans Administration education Yellow Ribbon Program. INVEST is a collaborative effort between Wilkes University veteran serving departments and community partners. By creating a safety net of support that includes not only educational access, job/career opportunities, but peer-to-peer social and emotional support, INVEST will help to mitigate risk factors of transitioning to civilian life.
