ShareCorps - Washington UCC - Homework Club/Summer Program
 
 
 
Washington UCC is a mission church in a poor, under-educated, under-employed community. These services are offered to improve the lives of those in our community and beyond. Each of these programs involve procuring, cooking, serving and/or delivering food to at-risk children and families: Summer Youth Program, including SFSP, Monday - Thursday for 8 weeks; Camp Community Cafe, a free lunch Monday - Thursday year round; Homework Club, Monday - Thursday with meals provided; Back To School, supplying back packs, school supplies, new clothes and food; Thanksgiving Food Boxes; Christmas Gift program, providing clothes, toys and food for families, usually 300+ children; Camp Cupboard and Closet, a free store for household goods, clothing, furniture and food. Benefit Bank services are also available.

Member Duties : 1. Expand the capacity and effectiveness of Washington United Church of Christ’s Homework Club, a Monday-Thursday after-school tutoring program, by recruiting, training and nurturing volunteer tutors. The ShareCorps volunteer will recruit students for Homework Club and will develop relationships with students, their families and schools. A specific goal of this position is to improve the quality of Homework Club services, including meals, transportation and academic achievement. 2. Improve the capacity and quality of the 8-week, Monday-Thursday Summer Youth Program to ensure the goal of achieving healthy futures by structuring a summer reading and tutoring program. The ShareCorps volunteer will assemble curriculum to include nutrition education, communication skills, conflict resolution skills, self-awareness and self-esteem. This position will also include working with staff to improve the quality and availability of meals for the children.
