College Health Corps, UofM -UROC (MNCC)

The University of Minnesota Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center (UROC), links the University of Minnesota in vital partnership with urban communities to advance learning, improve quality of life, and discover breakthrough solutions to critical problems. UROC represents the University’s strong commitment to long-term relationships with our urban neighbors that will transform both communities. Now in our fifth year, we are guided by core principles of access and accountability, excellence, equity-mindedness, and a commitment to reducing disparities and broadening opportunities. UROC works to build thriving, innovative, and respectful collaborations for a healthy and vibrant North Minneapolis, contribute to the creation of new models of urban community development, and strengthen the University of Minnesota as a vitally engaged university serving the public good. In 2013, UROC launched a major new initiative—to work collaboratively on a community vision and action plan to reduce individual, family and community harm caused by childhood trauma—called the Trauma Recovery Project (TRP). This work brings together university researchers, faith leaders, community mental health practitioners, educators, families, youth and elders to collaboratively explore the roots of trauma and the path to healing. The project is built around a core of engagement with families who have had to confront issues of childhood trauma and child mental health. This is a participatory movement for surfacing deep and grounded wisdom, from within marginalized communities, to develop their own solutions. We anticipate this project leading to lasting university-community collaborations around health that will reduce health disparities related to mental health and stress-related chronic illnesses. **Interviews will occur on a rolling basis and preference will be given to candidates who apply before April 11th. Candidates must also email a resume and cover letter.**

Member Duties : The VISTA will work to support the coordination of University of Minnesota Urban Research and Outreach Engagement Center (UROC) in developing a unique collaborative by working to build strong partnerships between diverse partners including Faith leaders, Community Mental Health Practitioners, University Researchers, Educators, Youth & Elders, and Families. We envision the VISTA working within each group to support their engagement in the process and helping each group surface their own unique wisdom and strategies. The goal of the project is to build on the critical wisdom, knowledge and experiences of communities to develop solutions to challenging issues of mental health in an urban context and pair that wisdom with university, research-based, evidence to develop powerful new ways of confronting the vexing issues related to trauma, mental health and historical trauma. At heart, this work is about eliminating health disparities by ethnicities and class in our urban core.
