VYDC-Big Heavy World

PROGRAM: VT Youth Development Corps members promote hope, justice, & wellbeing for all VT youth. Their service supports innovative initiatives at nonprofit organizations, municipalities, and schools that foster positive youth development and build resilience in youth, helping them avoid opioid use and other unhealthy behaviors. SITE: Located in Burlington, VT, Big Heavy World was established to preserve the historical record of music originating in Vermont, create economic opportunity for Vermont's musicians and the industries vital to them, develop community among Vermont musicians and their patrons; and accomplish this mission in a substance-free environment that empowers and educates youth. We serve the young adults who participate on the volunteer crew; The musical artists of Vermont who are encouraged and promoted through the organization's efforts; And the present and future citizens of Vermont who benefit from the preservation of the historical record of Vermont's culture. We provide a platform for career exploration, job skills building, self-confidence, civic engagement, and empowerment for youth needed for them to find personal success in adulthood. Our programs give youth the community connections and social stimulus to remain in Vermont and contribute to its future. Fostering success for Vermont made music also contributes to the well-being of the state. Vermont's community of musicians extends across a rural state that lacks the resources of a large urban center. The VYDC AmeriCorps member supports our efforts by recruiting, training, and managing youth and young adult volunteers. The environment of the organization is educational and empowering; introducing unskilled young adults to a wide variety of broadcast, media, business, engineering, archival, and music industry tasks.
