College Health Corps, Youth Violence Intervention (MNCC)

The Vista will support the Minneapolis Health Department’s (MHD) youth violence prevention efforts. MHD’s mission is to improve the quality of life for all people in the city by protecting the environment, preventing disease and injury, promoting healthy behaviors, and creating a city that is a healthy place to live, work, and play. In 2008 the City initiated a public health-centered response to the issue of youth violence to be organized within MHD. A public health framework incorporating primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention allows MHD to address youth violence holistically, looking at individual supports and interventions and systems-level infrastructure and process improvements. The primary project area for the VISTA is the Minneapolis Youth Violence Intervention Program (MYVIP). Through MYVIP, youth who present to a hospital with a violent assault injury will meet with a trained professional who can provide a needs assessment and follow-up responsive services around trauma, crisis support, and mental health counseling. Initial framework is in place for the program, but the VISTA will build capacity for continued development and successful implementation of the program. Additionally, the VISTA will play an important role in coordinating, developing, and implementing trainings around issues related to youth violence prevention for hospital staff, medical residents, and community based organizations. That work will be in collaboration with the Prevention Research Center at the University of Minnesota. Finally, The VISTA will play a critical role in MHD’s plans to support smaller grassroots organizations with resources and information around increasing organizational capacity, training on best practices for youth violence prevention and service delivery, and training on cultural specificity. **Interviews will occur on a rolling basis and preference will be given to candidates who apply before April 11th. Member Duties : MYVIP: research best practices for violent trauma response services; work within existing hospital partnerships to develop programmatic elements; outreach to recruit more hospitals; provide and/or coordinate training for hospital staff; data collection and evaluation; grant identification and writing Training: coordinate implementation of training for medical residents on interventions for youth with violent assault injuries; coordinate development of training for medical professionals and community based providers; train service providers to implement the BUILD youth violence prevention curriculum; staff advisory committees; develop an at-risk youth services resource manual for use by service providers; design and conduct follow-up work with youth and families served by programming. Community-based capacity building: recruit organizations; develop, deliver, and/or coordinate training curriculum; perform follow-up work with organizations; grant identification and writing
