College Health Corps, Community Dental Care (MNCC)

Community Dental Care’s mission is to ensure equal access to quality dental care and preventive education for all. As a community clinic serving low-income and minority people, we provide a full range of clinical services, preventive education programs and training for dental professionals. Of the 31,500 patients served at our St. Paul, Maplewood and Rochester clinics last year, 81% were on public programs and 80% were a minority. Our staff has a strong commitment to improving the oral health of underserved children and families who have low health literacy and problems in accessing dental care. We promote good oral health through in-clinic education, outreach, and school-based sealant programs. The sheer numbers of children requiring our assistance has overwhelmed our limited program staff and prevented us from organizing our systems to serve our patients more efficiently. A VISTA volunteer will help our clinics increase capacity to serve low-income and minority patients through three primary activities: 1) Coordinate the development of volunteer policies and systems to increase volunteer participation; 2) Standardize protocols for our education and prevention program, resulting in more efficient programming and more children and pregnant women receiving oral health care instruction and preventive services; and 3) Update patient resource manuals for our different clinics, ensuring our patients are receiving the basic living and health resources they need. The challenge will be to adapt processes, new services and new programming to the extremely high needs of low-income minority and immigrant communities from the Twin Cities, and to develop materials that are culturally and linguistically appropriate for different levels of health literacy. **Interviews will occur on a rolling basis and preference will be given to candidates who apply before April 11th. Candidates must also email a resume and cover letter.**
