College Health Corps, MPS Youth Farm (MNCC)

Youth Farm and Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) works in partnership to expand access to hands-on, garden-based food, nutrition and agriculture education for MPS students. Youth Farm’s mission is simple: We Farm to Grow Food, Community, and Leaders through experiential education, leadership, community organizing, and urban agriculture in five neighborhoods in the Twin Cities. In the summer, youth participate in farming activities on one of 16 urban farms sites, prepare lunch, and deliver produce to neighbors, families, and corner stores on bike. During the school year youth participate in farming, greenhouse, and cooking classes in school and afterschool as well as community organizing activities in their neighborhoods. MPS is a national leader in shifting to more healthy and flavorful options for students while working to connect them with food, nutrition, and agriculture education. Rooted in community partnerships, some of the exciting programs include sourcing food from local farmers, a Chef Council of advisers who help with recipe development and education, a fresh fruit and vegetable snack program in 23 elementary schools, salad bars in 1/3 of our schools, and a taste testing program. Youth Farm and MPS use their partnership to leverage leadership in the school garden arena within the school district. Youth Farm and MPS serve a population that is traditionally at-risk for adverse health outcomes related to diet and lifestyle. Additionally, there is a large community need for leadership in the school garden arena within the school district. A CHC VISTA will work to address these issues by supporting Youth Farm and MPS to expand access to garden-based food, nutrition, and agriculture education for MPS students. ** Interviews will occur on a rolling basis and preference will be given to candidates who apply before April 11th. Candidates must also email a resume and cover letter.**
