North End Community Improvement Collaborative- Local Foods

The North End Local Foods Initiative (NELFI) will increase NECIC’s capacity to improve the health and economic status of North End residents through a Market Garden Incubator Program & Local Foods Hub. The VISTA Member who joins NELFI team will build capacity by developing resources (such as toolkits, curriculum, funding), building partnerships, increasing fresh food access opportunities, and developing evaluation tools. The Market Garden Incubator Program will enable an interested gardener to launch a successful growing venture and to produce fruits and vegetables for local markets. An organized program will be developed to provide market growers with education and technical assistance, infrastructure and equipment needs, business support and networking, and market development and promotion. The Incubator Program will help participants access common resources such as land, tools, seeds, compost, etc. The development of outlets for sale is critical to provide income and to ensure the long-term success and sustainability of gardening ventures. A new North End Farmers Market will be started as an outlet for the produce of local growers and market gardeners, and to increase the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables to North End residents. The VISTA Member will also play an integral role in the startup of a Local Food Hub, which will create avenues for local growers to market, distribute and sell for profit. It will serve to connect local buyers and sellers via the web and possibly in-store location. Identifying local institutional and restaurant buyers will increase the potential growth of local food efforts and market outlets.
