Ohio CDC Association VISTA Leader

The OCDCA VISTA Project will concentrate on goals that build the capacity of community development organizations in the following ways: (1) to provide affordable housing, (2) to increase employment opportunities, (3) to provide housing counseling, (4) to increase and maintain assets for individuals, (5) to increase access to fresh and healthy foods, and (6) to increase energy and water efficiency in housing. Reaching these goals is imperative to taking a comprehensive approach to poverty alleviation in Ohio's communities. High levels of concentrated poverty have shown to negatively impact other areas of life to those who experience it. Concentrated poverty can lead to: limited educational opportunity, poor health outcomes, hinder wealth building, reduced private sector investment and increased prices for goods and services, such as food. The OCDCA VISTA Project intends to improve these negative outcomes by increasing agricultural gardening programs and trainings which will lead to improved health, secondary income, an increase in skills held, and an increase in property value through reuse of derelict vacant land. Housing counseling will keep people in their homes and address the systematic causes of vacancy and impacts it has on the livelihoods of impoverished families. By increasing the number of Individual Development Accounts (IDA), providing financial literacy and microenterprise courses, and repairing credit there will be an increase financial stability for families. Employment readiness programs and support systems will help sustain and encourage persons throughout the job search process, prepare them for the type of work and also help to ensure job success through mentoring and relationship building. Finally, education on energy efficiency provides residents living in poverty access to services that they may not have had access to otherwise. *Must have at least One year prior AmeriCorps experience* *Flexible start date*
