Academic Advocates for Summer Learning

MCCOY is seeking high energy individuals who are passionate about helping children learn during the summer months by serving as Summer Learning Associates in community based summer youth programs. As the capacity building intermediary for central Indiana’s youth agencies, MCCOY supports the over 180 programs that are funded by the members of the Summer Youth Program Fund, a coalition of local funders who provide over $3 million each summer to help provide high quality summer programs for children where they can learn new skills, be engaged with caring adults in a safe environment, and have opportunities for new experiences like sports, drama, and music. One emphasis of the Fund has been to help programs combat the “summer slide”, a loss of academic progress in both math and reading, which is prevalent among children who live in poverty. Member Duties As an Americorps VISTA summer associate, you will work under the supervision and guidance of community based youth agency staff to provide fun, hands on learning activities, especially in reading and math that will both prevent summer learning loss and promote academic growth. In addition, you will have the chance to have fun experiences that build social, interpersonal, and leadership skills of the children with whom you work while also serving as an unofficial mentor and role model for children ages 6—12. Many of these children have little exposure to someone pursuing higher education with clear career goals. Your sharing your experience of college might be the trigger for them to pursue their dreams. This position comes with a guarantee: you will have a summer experience you won’t soon forget. This is an 8 week commitment from June 5---July 30, 2017. The schedule is 40 hours a week, Monday---Friday.
