Veterans Recovery Project of CT - Volunteer-Companion VISTA

The Veterans Recovery Project of Connecticut, a multi-site collaboration of organizations in the New Haven and Bridgeport areas, serves Veterans experiencing homelessness, serious mental illness, unemployment, and legal challenges. The partner organizations will place seven AmeriCorps/VISTA members to work on inter-related projects to help end homelessness among Veterans. One partner organization is the VA Connecticut's Errera Community Care Center (ECCC), which offers a wide array of psychosocial services to Veterans in support of their recovery, including supported employment, therapeutic groups, and a wellness center as well as clinical case management in the community and housing programs. This new VISTA position, “Community Volunteer-Companion Coordinator” will expand the project’s goals by creating a sustainable volunteer program that assists Veterans with community re-integration. The Community Companion Program will pair Veterans with volunteers in the community, who meet regularly with Veterans as companions, connecting over shared interests and providing emotional support. The Program’s mission is to help Veterans form relationships and support systems outside the VA care system, hastening their re-integration into community living and helping them transition out of high-intensity support programs to full independence. This program is part of a larger statewide initiative to combat Veteran homelessness by helping Veterans move on from supportive housing and other programs, creating more program slots for new Veterans experiencing homelessness. The VISTA will develop and promote this new program to serve Veterans across the range of ECCC’s programs. As part of the application process, please send a resume and cover letter to Christina Lindstrom at Christina.Lindstrom@va.gov
