Veterans Recovery Project of CT - Habitat Outreach & Housing

In the U.S., Veterans make up over 26% of the homeless population with many more at risk for becoming homeless. In Connecticut between 3,000 and 4,000 Veterans do not have a home. Women and young vets aged 18 to 24 are increasingly unemployed and underemployed, are living in substandard conditions, and are at far greater risk of becoming homeless. Men and Women who have fought for our country should never have to fight to keep a roof over their heads. The Veterans Recovery Project of Connecticut is a multi-site AmeriCorps VISTA project consisting of a collaboration of organizations in the New Haven and Bridgeport areas that serve Veterans experiencing homelessness, unemployment, legal issues, and serious mental illness. The partner organizations will place seven AmeriCorps VISTA members to work to address these issues. One of the Project's host sites, Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County, launched its first-ever Veterans Build program called Habitat for Heroes in the summer of 2012 with the goal of providing homes for low-income veterans and their families. A second, but equally important goal is to provide returning veterans with the opportunity to volunteer alongside other community members and veterans who have overcome some of the issues that returning veterans may be facing. Habitat for Heroes has partnered with several local and national organizations with the desire to end homelessness among the Veteran population. The VA and several transitional homes in the area are working with Habitat to identify families. The Trumbull Rotary, several local schools and businesses have helped raise funds. Local Veterans organizations provide volunteers for the project. If you are interested in this position, please apply here AND send a resume and cover letter to Eileen Bakos, Habitat Outreach and Housing Supervisor, at ebakos@habitatcfc.org.
