California STEM Afterschool Expansion VISTA

The Afterschool Alliance and the Statewide Afterschool networks want all children to have access to affordable high quality afterschool and summer programs. High quality afterschool programs have shown to increase student academic performance, behavioral improvements and have been a factor in supporting regular school attendance. One area where afterschool programs are particularly effective is in exposing students to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. The Power of Discovery: STEM2 is an important new effort to increase learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics for young people in California. The mission of the Power of Discovery: STEM2 is to lead a networked statewide movement that makes inspirational and engaging STEM learning opportunities a reality for students in expanded learning programs. By the year 2020, we envision that one million students annually will participate in high-quality STEM programs. The VISTA’s work will increase awareness of resources on the part of statewide expanded learning providers through research, development, and dissemination of such resources through a strategic communications plan.
