Maker Ed VISTA Leader

The Maker VISTA program will foster maker programming year round in 10 locations across the nation. Five locations in CA started in November 2013. We are now recruiting for the second group of VISTA members in 5 other states. The program will use community-school outreach strategies to ensure high poverty youth have access to making opportunities. By the middle of 2014, the program will have placed 20 members and 2 leaders into our National Maker Network structure to act as community connectors to develop thriving Maker Hubs within high poverty communities. The program places members in underserved areas to reduce poverty by inspiring low-income students through maker programs that engage them in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), the arts, and learning as a whole. Maker Ed will select VISTA leader, who MUST have previously served as a VISTA member for at least one year, to start in September 2014 and serve at Maker Ed’s offices in Oakland, CA. This VISTA leader will primarily support the work of the 10 new VISTA members placed in 5 locations throughout the US, but will also become a partner for our current leader who works with our California VISTA members. The goal of the Maker Education Initiative (Maker Ed) is to build the capacity of youth serving organizations to engage youth in making by developing educational frameworks and disseminating resources drawn from a national network. The Maker VISTA Program will specifically increase opportunities for high poverty youth to engage in making activities that ultimately increase academic engagement in each hub. Leaders monitor and support the members who are placed in local hubs to help them execute outputs, achieve outcomes, overcome obstacles, and collect and document best practices. The leader’s support is essential to ensuring the success of this Maker VISTA program as a national initiative. Maker VISTA Leaders will receive a stipend of $17,064.
