UNH Cooperative Extension-Sullivan County

Sullivan County is one of two counties in New Hampshire ranked in the lowest bracket with regard to healthy behaviors, measures of education, employment, income, social support, community safety, and environmental quality. In looking at these needs, Sullivan County is interested in increasing opportunities and events to promote interest in 4-H Clubs and the 4-H Living Interactive Family Education (LIFE) program to at-risk youth and their families. The overall objective of the 4-H LIFE program is to promote a strong, healthy and nurturing family environment for children of incarcerated parents while helping the incarcerated parent become a positive role model. The 4-H LIFE program consists of three integrated components: parenting skill classes, 4-H planning meetings (with inmates) and 4-H family/club meetings. Through 4-H Clubs and the 4-H LIFE programs, the VISTA will work in Sullivan County with at-risk and limited resource youth. 4-H is a youth educational program that helps youth acquire knowledge, develop life skills, and form attitudes to enable them to become self-directing, productive and contributing members of society. 4-H emphasizes the importance of involving youth in the learning process and is offered free of charge to youth ages 5-18. Youth from all cultural and economic backgrounds enjoy getting involved in the 4-H fun based around citizenship, healthy living, and science.

Member Duties : The VISTA member will learn about the 4-H Youth Development program and its volunteer recruitment, selection, and training process. The VISTA will reach out to at-risk youth and their families to engage them in the UNH Cooperative Extension 4-H Club system and help them learn about the benefits of NH 4-H programs. In addition, they will work with the 4-H LIFE program to engage low-income, incarcerated parents and their children in Cooperative Extension programming. The VISTA will increase public awareness and enrollment in NH 4-H programs for at-risk youth and families living in poverty. They will build outreach systems to recruit new 4-H volunteers and connect at-risk youth to existing clubs as well as encouraging the development of new clubs.
