Lakes Area Restorative Justice - Initiative Foundation

The Lakes Area Restorative Justice Project would like to welcome you to the beautiful Vacationland of the Brainerd Lakes Area! Here you will find a vast array of fun summer and winter sports and activities to enjoy in your time off from being our VISTA Member for the 2015-2016 program year. Lakes Area Restorative Justice Project operates two core programs: RESTORATIVE GROUP (RGC) is a diversion program for youth ages 10-17 who are facing the court system. RGC is facilitated by two trained facilitators and offers the victims a voice in how the offender will repair the harm caused, thus holding the offender accountable in a restorative manner VS a punitive manner. CIRCLES IN THE SCHOOLS (CIS) is to empower students to have a positive impact on their school's social milieu. By addressing negative school climate, CIS impacts workforce development by reinforcing accountability in students, helping keep students in an environment to learn critical job skills, and developing in student’s appropriate social and communication skills to maintain a positive environment both in school and in the broader community. Our VISTA project will further develop the CIS program as well as expand the Safer Saner Schools initiative into Brainerd area schools.

Member Duties : **Position open until filled, so apply today!** The goal of the VISTA project will be to establish the restorative process, using best practices, into the schools of Crow Wing County. VISTA will assist in creating a model for the Safer Saner School project that will encourage schools to use more restorative practices to address negative behavior in area schools, including conducting school needs assessments, interviewing school personnel, developing a process to introduce the project, and developing trainings for school staff regarding restorative practices. VISTA will also work to expand and build the capacity and sustainability of the Circles in Schools program, including recruiting volunteers to lead the Circles, evaluating Circles currently operating, making recommendations for program improvements and refinements, and creating a public awareness campaign to promote both projects.
