Legal Aid Society

The VISTA workers will be responsible for planning and managing Legal Aid's Outreach and Community Legal Education Program by working with partner organizations to develop appropriate content for clinics and presentations. Topics to be addressed by the clinics include consumer debt, life planning, housing, tax, accessing health coverage, and other issues related to economic stability. The clinics will offer attendees preventative education that will assist them in understanding their legal options. As a result of the education, individuals will be better equipped to address financial stressors they face and to resolve issues that threaten their economic stability. At each clinic Legal Aid and volunteer attorneys give a presentation about civil legal topics. After each presentation, attendees have the opportunity to ask general questions, and to the extent time permits, the presenters remain to consult with attendees who wish to discuss their specific legal problem. The VISTA workers will contact public libraries and public service providers to secure locations for each clinic and presentation. In addition, the VISTA workers will work with partner organizations to develop appropriate content for the presentations, publicize the event, and recruit clients. In short, the VISTA workers will be responsible for producing the clinics and presentations from start to finish.

Member Duties : The VISTA workers will manage the Outreach and Community Legal Education Program, which seeks to provide advice on civil legal topics to low and moderate income individuals, people with disabilities, veterans, homeless, and the under- and uninsured. The VISTAs will begin by compiling a list of all social service agencies, libraries, homeless shelters, and veteran service organizations in the Legal Aid service area and will extend invitations to host a clinic or a presentation to all relevant organizations. Once the session has been scheduled, the VISTAs will create a flyer which asks participants to make a reservation. The flyer will be distributed widely to ensure program attendance. The VISTAs will attend each presentation and bring with them a sign-in sheet to track program participants. The VISTA workers will also provide information about other Legal Aid resources.
