University of Georgia VISTA Network: Senior Hunger Coalition

Almost 9 million older adults in the U.S are at risk for hunger, and Georgia is 10th in state rankings for older adult risk of hunger. In response, The Athens Senior Hunger Coalition (SHC) was initiated by the Athens Community Council on Aging (ACCA) to combat senior hunger in the Athens area through programs and partnerships with local organizations that have a mutual dedication to serving older adults. The goals of the SHC are to enhance and expand these partnerships to maximize available resources, raise awareness of senior hunger in the Athens community, identify older adults who are food insecure using standardized measurements, and create innovative, sustainable, cost-effective, and outcome driven interventions. Working with local partners, the SHC offers interventions which combat senior hunger and its root causes such as healthy food accessibility and social isolation. These interventions include weekly supplemental meal distributions from the main campus of ACCA and biweekly meal deliveries, bimonthly Mobile Food Pantries, Take Out Tuesday monthly commodity and meal deliveries to individuals on the Meals on Wheels waiting list, On-site Community Garden and Produce Stand, SNAP outreach, training and application assistance and the Lunch Buddy program which partners homebound older adults with student and community volunteers to share a weekly noon day meal.

Member Duties : The VISTA member is placed at the Athens Community Council on Aging (ACCA) in Athens, GA and works with the various partners to build capacity within the Senior Hunger Coalition (SHC) efforts. Specifically, the VISTA will be a central communicator between the SHC partners and ACCA in order to expand meal distribution to better meet the needs of current clients and to reach more under-served seniors in the area. The VISTA will help secure resources for the SHC by raising awareness of senior hunger in the Athens area, writing grants, and organizing fundraisers. The VISTA will also help strengthen existing beyond-meal initiatives including Senior SNAP Outreach, Lunch Buddy, On-Site Produce Stand and Community Garden coordination and a senior transportation effort, all of which target the root causes of senior hunger.
