VHA Resident Employment Program

Make a real difference in the lives of poor people. Help develop a program to stop the cycle of poverty. Work with youth who want to escape poverty. Work with families wanting to end 2nd and 3rd generational poverty. The Vancouver Housing Authority (VHA) provides housing and rent subsidies to over 4000 households in Clark County, WA. The workable population continues to be the focus of our second year project. Low-income residents often want to work but are unsuccessful in the job market due to poor job skills, histories and /or lack of ongoing employment support. VHA is committed to encouraging low-income residents to become self-reliant through integrated services in housing, employment training, support services, and education. Our objective with the current VISTA employment project is to put in place employment readiness, training resources, and structure which will ensure residents have the skills necessary to become successful employees. The VISTA member's role will be to work closely with staff to refine the current employment related support systems, enlarge the pool of participating employers and residents, develop a youth career exploration education program, and increase the VHA's capacity to expand our OJT programs and temp positions. MEMBERS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN OUTSIDE EMPLOYMENT DURING THEIR TERM OF SERVICE
