UNH Cooperative Extension Military 4-H Program

The UNHCE Military Youth and Family Program, part of 4-H Youth Development, partners with all branches of the military, American Legion, Red Cross, NH Department of Education, Child Care Resource & Referral, Boys and Girls Clubs, and many other youth and family organizations to form the outreach effort called Operation: Military Kids (OMK). The mission of OMK is to create support networks for military children and connect them with other military and non-military youth through a variety of recreational, social and educational programs. The state partners create programs that serve the unique needs of military kids and their families before, during and after their family members are deployed. OMK also works to foster public understanding about the impact of the deployment cycle on the military member, family, child and larger community. 4-H Youth Development is the youth educational program of UNH Cooperative Extension. The mission of 4-H is to help youth acquire knowledge, develop life skills, and form attitudes to enable them to become self-directing, productive and contributing members of society. 4-H emphasizes the importance of partnering youth with caring adults and involving them in the learning process. It is offered free of charge to youth ages 5-18. When National Guard, Reserve, and other military families living in civilian communities become mobilized, their children experience the stress of being a military kid. These children have unique needs for special support and services, and could benefit from the positive youth development opportunities available through 4-H. Operation: Military Kids hopes for all military youth to get involved in their communities in order to: form support networks by meeting other military kids, more easily cope with the stress of deployment, meet new friends, and have fun! 4-H clubs provide youth with these opportunities, while also making them a part of the nation’s largest youth development organization.
