Office of the Mayor's Baltimore Food Desert Retail Strategy

The Food Desert Retail Strategy will address health outcomes of Baltimore City residents. Food policy and food access have emerged as critical arenas for public policy that integrate health, environmental sustainability, and economic development. Baltimore City has higher rates of obesity and chronic disease than the Maryland state average rates. The burden of chronic disease and highest premature death due to cardiovascular disease disproportionately falls on those living in food deserts. Approximately 120,000 people, or 20% of Baltimore City residents, live in food deserts, which include 25% of children and 25% of African Americans. Research from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health demonstrates that residents, regardless of zip code, want a full service high quality grocery store. Residents with better access to supermarkets and limited access to convenience stores tend to have lower levels of obesity. The VISTA position will directly support the development and implementation of the Food Desert Retail Strategy, led by the Baltimore Food Policy Initiative (BFPI), Baltimore Development Corporation (BDC) and the Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD). The Food Desert Retail Strategy will reduce the number of people living in food deserts and grow the economy through four key strategies: expansion and retention of grocery stores, creating a grocery job training facility, supporting food entrepreneurism, and providing healthy corner store technical assistance. Eliminating food deserts will increase the current number of desirable neighborhoods to grow Baltimore by 10,000 new residents in 10 years.
