The Advancement Foundation- FASWVA Salem

The Advancement Foundation (TAF) was founded in 2007 to impact community wide social change by eliminating poverty. We accomplish this by strategic focus for grassroots nonprofits that provide support for the basic needs of the disadvantaged. Throughout SW Virginia 10.9% of the population is living below poverty level. Fortunately, there are many health and human service nonprofits in the area that are striving to meet increased needs. Unfortunately, the agencies are struggling in the areas of capacity building and sustainability. Our mission is to improve the lives of the underprivileged. The Foundation leverages the resources of various human services agencies, combined with direct services, to teach life skills that work to eliminate poverty while empowering the poor with training and support. The Advancement Foundation serves as an Intermediary Agency for the AmeriCorps VISTA program. As an Intermediary Agency, The Advancement Foundation manages VISTA members who are assigned different projects within the Southwest Virginia community aimed at fighting poverty and improving the lives of disadvantaged individuals. VISTA members commit to serve full-time for a year at a nonprofit organization or local governmental agency, working to fight illiteracy, improve health service, create businesses, strengthen community groups, and much more. Through The Advancement Foundation, VISTA members have the potential to engage in service learning to the community under the guided supervision by Foundation staff and various nonprofit Directors.
