Texas Family Literacy AmeriCorps

Texas Family Literacy will host 35 Full-Time members in Austin or Houston. Members will serve a minimum of 1700 hours, 40-45 hrs per week. The term of service for members is eleven months, from August, 2014 – July 15, 2015. Adult Literacy members will be placed at nonprofit agencies that offer community-based literacy programs to adults who read at 2nd - 6th grade levels. Adult Literacy members will teach and/or tutor adults in ESL (English as a Second Language), ABE (Adults Basic Education), or GED classes. Early Childhood members will provide early childhood literacy and math interventions with children ages 2-5 years old. PALS members will help parents learn specific behaviors to support their young children’s social-emotional, cognitive, and language development. Teaching responsibilities include lesson planning, pre- & post-testing, tracking student attendance, and reporting literacy progress. Members may also assist with outreach, volunteer management, and special events. Members are expected to work with the agency to create a weekly work schedule that will support the agency’s literacy program needs and fulfill member national service hours. Members will receive more than 50 hours of training. Members benefit from and are required to participate in the following year-round activities: professional development, community service projects (two of which are national service events), team meetings, team building activities, mid-year and annual retreats. AmeriCorps is not only a chance to serve the community, but it is a great opportunity to get experience in the nonprofit sector, gain important work skills, and practice leadership. 1 in 5 native English speaking adults in Texas can’t read or write well enough to fill out a job application. Although there are hundreds of community-based literacy programs in Texas, less than 5% of adults needing services had access to a program in 2009.
