Denver Public Schools Math Fellows Program
 
 
 
Applicants must FIRST be selected into the DPS Math Fellows Program, please complete this process first at www.denvermathfellows.com prior to submitting your AmeriCorps application. Upon completion of serving 1,700+ hours, AmeriCorps members will receive a $5,550 education award they can put towards qualified student loans or qualified tuition. Math Fellows provide small group math tutoring to students below grade level in groups of two-to-one or four-to-one for a minimum of 45 minutes daily, emphasizing depth rather than breadth in math. Service opportunities available at the following Turnaround Schools: Greenlee Elementary Trevista ECE-8 Lake International Middle School Bruce Randolph School Charles M. Schenck Community School Goals include: Develop problem-solving skills and close gaps in their mathematical knowledge that are holding them back. Re-teach students’ key concepts based on lessons in their math class Develop strong relationships with students that help increase student engagement and participation in school The tutoring occurs during the school day and is in addition to a student’s daily math class. Fellows are an integral part of the school team at each school site. Instruction: Carry out all the responsibilities of an academic tutor and ensure that students are constantly learning and being challenged Observe, monitor, and assess students’ performance on a regular basis and record data to track student performance Assist students in setting and reaching academic goals Present subject matter to students using a variety of research-based instructional strategies centered on students’ individual needs Planning: Prepare instructional activities that aid in mastering specific academic skills, including subject matter content and state-mandated and assessments Collaborate with appropriate classroom teachers, admin, and Fellows Coordinator to ensure each student is on track with classroom materials and instruction

Member Duties : Math Fellows have a variety of responsibilities that allow them to be an integral piece of their student’s educational experience. Fellow responsibilities typically fall into one of the following categories: Instruction, Planning, Communication & Feedback, and Compliance. Examples of duties that Fellows have that fall into these categories include: Instruction: • Carry out all the responsibilities of an academic tutor and ensure that students are constantly learning and being challenged. • Observe, monitor, and assess students’ performance on a regular basis and record data to track student performance. • Assist students in setting and reaching academic goals. • Modify instruction based on student assessment results. • Present subject matter to students using a variety of research-based instructional strategies centered on students’ individual needs. • Work alongside school staff to broaden the academic and instructional resources available to students.
