Eckerd College (FL|CC)

There are two problems Eckerd College hopes to impact through this AmeriCorps VISTA program: educational disparities existing in the City of St. Petersburg and environmental problems specifically impacting low-income communities. Education in Pinellas County has a huge disparity, espeically as many "F" schools are located in predominantly poor African American neighborhoods. Additionally, commingling with these educational issues are environmental issues that are specifically impacting low-income communities such as the recent dumping of sewage waste water and a lack of access to fresh food creating a situation where these communities are left in a vulnerable position. This project will work with multiple community members and community partners to reasonably assess and impact environmental problems impacting local communities. The AmeriCorps VISTA member will engage the campus and local community by acting as an active liaison between the Office of Service-Learning and local community partners and constituents to combat these environmental issues to lessen the disparity and poverty in Pinellas county.
