2015-16 Food Access Coordinator
 
 
 
More than 200,000 children in Maryland are at risk for hunger (Share our Strength). For too many young people their last meal of the day is their lunch at school and during the summer months, without regular meals at school they face great food insecurity. Baltimore City has the highest concentration of poverty in the state of Maryland. In 2012, 85% of Baltimore City received Free and Reduced School Meals. ). Many of the students rely on their school meals as their main source of nutrition. The percent of students eligible for free- and reduced-price meals for in Baltimore is the highest in the state. The Food Access VISTA will work with afterschool providers, Family Child Care Program providers and other community partners to increase the penetration of the Federal Child and Adult Care Food Program and Summer Food Service Program, boosting the number of meals being served to children and youth who need them most, increasing training and support to child care program staff, and analyzing the impact of nutrition programs in Baltimore. This position is sponsored by the Maryland Out of School Time (MOST) Network’s VISTA Program. The Maryland Out of School Time (MOST) Network, a project of Baltimore's Safe & Sound Campaign, is a statewide initiative to increase the quantity and quality of out of school time (OST) opportunities for youth. MOST VISTA members create a community that is passionate about youth development and participate in extensive training and professional development throughout their service year.

Member Duties : The Baltimore City Food Access VISTA will: 1) Provide support to the Baltimore City Partnership to End Childhood Hunger; 2) Organize outreach to support expansion of Afterschool and Summer Meals in Baltimore City a) work with summer meals Community Champions b) coordinate with partners to identify afterschool program sites and populate CLF map and MOST database; 3) Recruit and train mobile meals volunteers; 4) Collaborate on Food Stamp outreach.
