Boys and Girls Club of Long Beach Volunteer Coordinator

The Boys & Girls Club of the Long Beach Peninsula opened its doors on November 14, 2008 in response to a community need – our youth needed high impact after school programs. Our mission is to inspire and enable all youth ages 6 through high school graduation to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens through the development of a positive self-image and self-reliance. The Club offers members guidance, homework help, daily nutrition through the USDA At-Risk Snack Program, and arts and recreation. Our Club is located in Pacific County Washington, an area challenged with dwindling resources and growing poverty. The Washington State Family Council research assigned Pacific County a ranking of SEVERE as the state’s highest risk for children and youth. The Healthy Youth Survey shows that portions of Pacific County have twice the state average of hospitalized domestic violence victims, exceptionally high infant mortality rates, very high drug/alcohol use, suicide ideation, school apathy, and overweight teens. 58% of children are eligible for reduced-price school lunches. These staggering facts reinforce what we already know – Pacific County youth need a safe place to go, and the Club is one of the few places for youth in the county. The Boys & Girls Club is open to local children on a daily basis. Many of the youth we serve are disengaged from their school, community or family. In 2011, we served 316 registered members. Of those members, 54% come from families who qualify for free/reduced lunch at school. Our demographics break down as follows: 74% Caucasian 15% Hispanic/Latino 6% Native American 5% Other We are the smallest Boys & Girls Club in the country, located in one of the more rural and isolated parts of Washington. In 2012, our operating budget was $234,000 and we expect it to be $232,000 in 2013.
