SVPRI Program Manager

Initially created through a partnership between Social Venture Partners Rhode Island and Ashoka’s Youth Venture, YSI is Social Enterprise Greenhouse’s (formerly SVPRI) afterschool youth entrepreneurship program, now nearing the end of its second year. The program, powered by Youth Venture tools and SE Greenhouse’s vision, guides students aged 13-18 through the process of conceptualizing and planning Social Ventures, defined as community-benefiting ventures - school clubs, community-based organizations, nonprofit businesses, even for-profit businesses - which address issues of concern in their schools, neighborhoods, or larger communities. This can manifest any number of ways, including raising awareness of, fundraising for, or donating proceeds in part to a community organization. A Venture can be any youth-created, youth-led organization/business designed to provide a positive lasting benefit in the school, neighborhood, or larger community. Our process (much simplified) involves helping students to identify their skills and passions, what communities they are invested in, and how they can combine those two things into a business or organization. We then facilitate the research and planning process, with the goal of helping students build a solid foundational plan with which to launch their business. At the end of the semester, they are then able to pitch their ideas to a panel of professionals and other youth entrepreneurs with the goal of receiving startup funding.
