WSC, King County Brightwater Center, Community Educator

The Brightwater Center’s mission is to educate and motivate a diverse community to act as stewards of our water resources. Brightwater education programs explore the science of water, wetland ecosystems, wastewater treatment plus relationships between people and their environment. Our programs provide hands-on, memorable experiences that encourage participants to consider how their values and behaviors can influence and ultimately impact the world around them. The Center is owned and operated by the King County Department of Natural Resources & Parks; however, programming is developed and implemented through partnerships between local conservation and education organizations. The Brightwater Center has been open for two years and has been very successful in educating the public about water systems through educational programming such as school field trips, family programs, adult workshops, teacher professional development and summer programs; however, we still have a need to expand our reach by going into the community and in developing consistent volunteer opportunities for the public. The AmeriCorps project focuses on increasing the Brightwater Center’s community outreach and promoting community stewardship action through volunteer events and targeted educational programming.
